Launch of the TERO.007 – Agricultural Land Management (ALM) Methodology for Public Consultation

Tero Carbon is pleased to announce the start of the public consultation process for the new TERO.007 – Agricultural Land Management (ALM) methodology, version 1.0. The consultation opens on November 6, 2025 and will remain open for 30 days. We invite all AFOLU project developers, consultants, auditors, stakeholders, and other participants in the carbon market to take part in this important discussion and share their feedback and suggestions.

Context and Relevance

The TERO.007 methodology addresses the growing demand for high-quality technical standards aligned with the Brazilian agricultural context. A key highlight of this version is its co-authorship between Hdom Consultoria Ambiental and the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture – University of São Paulo (CENA/USP).

Hdom is already well known for its leadership in the carbon methodologies sector — having developed TERO.001 – REDD+, TERO.002 – APD, TERO.003 – Carbon Stock in Forests, and TERO.006 – ARR — demonstrating its technical expertise in the certification of environmental assets.

Now, through this collaboration with CENA/USP, the methodology gains additional scientific strength.
CENA is a specialized institute within the University of São Paulo, with a long-standing record of excellence in research and development in agriculture, environmental sciences, and nuclear techniques applied to agri-environmental systems.

This partnership enhances Tero Carbon’s credibility and contributes to strengthening Brazil’s carbon market by providing a scientifically robust methodology tailored to local conditions.

Read the CENA/USP statement on the new methodology.

What’s New

In addition to the release of TERO.007, we also announce that the Tero Carbon Program document “TC-DC.CER.003 – Technical Guidelines for Carbon Quantification in AFOLU Projects” has been updated to version 1.2. Among the main innovations is the introduction of the “Bayesian Methodology for Carbon Stock Quantification and Certification,” authored by Maria Gabriela da Silva Araújo and Luiz Antonio Martinelli (CENA/USP). This new approach enhances the robustness of carbon quantification in agricultural systems, ensuring better adaptation to local conditions.

Tero Carbon Launches v2.1 Programs: Pioneering Readiness for the Regulated Market (SBCE) and Global Standards

Tero Carbon Launches v2.1 Programs: Pioneering Readiness for the Regulated Market (SBCE) and Global Standards

Tero Carbon is proud to announce the publication of version 2.1 of its Certification, Methodologies, and Assets Programs, along with an updated and robust set of methodologies for the AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use) sector. This is not just an update but a strategic milestone that raises the bar for carbon market integrity and places our partners at the forefront of the sector’s transformations.

This advancement is the direct result of a collaborative public consultation process, reinforcing our commitment to transparency and building an ecosystem of trust. The new versions are now publicly available on our website.

A Milestone for the Carbon Market: Ready for the SBCE

The main highlight of version 2.1 is its strategic alignment with Law nº 15.042/2024, which establishes the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (SBCE). Tero Carbon thus becomes the only Brazilian certifier with a framework already prepared for the requirements of the regulated market.

Isso significa que os projetos certificados sob nossas novas metodologias e programas estarão um passo à frente, com maior segurança e potencial para integrar o futuro mercado regulado de carbono no Brasil, garantindo um diferencial competitivo decisivo.

Alignment with Global Integrity Standards

In addition to our national pioneering, version 2.1 consolidates our alignment with the most demanding international benchmarks for quality and integrity, including:

  • ICROA (International Carbon Reduction and Offsetting Alliance): Our principles comply with the Code of Best Practice, assuring buyers that Tero Carbon credits represent real and verified climate mitigations.
  • CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation): The framework was developed with an eye toward future eligibility for the global aviation market, one of the most stringent in the world.

Key Enhancements in Version 2.1

The new versions bring greater clarity, robustness, and legal and technical security to the entire carbon project lifecycle:

  • Structured Governance: Dedicated documents for the Certification Program, Methodologies Program, and Assets Program, which organize the rules in a clear and auditable manner.
  • High-Integrity AFOLU Methodologies: Updates to the REDD+, APD (Avoided Planned Deforestation), ARR (Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation), and Carbon Stock methodologies, with enhanced mechanisms for additionality, permanence, and leakage.
  • Clear Distinction of Assets: We reinforce the fundamental difference between VCUs (Verified Carbon Units), intended for offsetting, and VCSUs (Verified Carbon Stock Units), focused on recognizing environmental assets, thereby promoting transparency and preventing greenwashing.
  • Built on Feedback: All improvements were built upon the valuable contributions received during the public consultation period for version 2.0.

Launched the Methodology TERO.004 – Carbon Stock in Agrosilvopastoral System Version 1.0

Today the Methodology TERO.004 – Carbon Stock in Agrosilvopastoral System, Version 1.0, was launched. Now, after the public consultation period and review of the comments arising from it, it is ready to receive projects.

Each methodology we launch goes through the following steps:

  • Announcement that there will be a public consultation, so that the public is aware of the next steps;
  • Public consultation period, so that the public can contribute their criticisms and suggestions through the online form available, as this way we can build together methodologies in accordance with the Brazilian reality and also reinforce the transparency of our processes; and
  • Analysis of all contributions received. We consider these suggestions in our next methodology update.

About TERO.004 Methodology

TERO.004 – Carbon Stock in Agrosilvopastoral System is an Agriculture, Forests and Land Use (AFOLU) methodology, in this first version, aimed at the cultivation of Coffee throughout the Brazilian territory. The methodology provides for the generation of Verified Carbon Credit (by Removal), represented by one ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). The project’s commitment period is unlimited, that is, its closing date can be defined later by communicating it to the certifier and the market.

The objective of this methodology is the generation of environmental assets in projects that promote the removal, conservation and preservation of carbon stocks in agroforestry farming systems throughout Brazilian territory. It is an incentive for farmers who, through their agricultural activities, contribute to the global climate balance.

The Carbon Stock of the project area can be monitored periodically through verification. Any verified increase in carbon stocks in the crop will be considered a Verified Carbon Credit in the amount exceeding the maximum stock previously measured.

The methodology, within the concept of Payment for Environmental Services (PSA), has as co-benefits the conservation and preservation of biome biodiversity and sustainable development. In addition to maintaining carbon stocks from agricultural crops, forestry is also accepted as a way of enriching biomass stocks.
