Fazenda Santa Bárbara, located in the municipality of Monte Carmelo, Minas Gerais (MG) is a reference in the Cerrado Mineiro coffee producing region. The history of use of the farm’s Eco Farm Santa Bárbara Coffee project area began in the 1970s when coffee production activities began. However, in the 1980s, coffee farming was replaced by beef cattle, milk and cereal farming activities that lasted for two decades. After this period, coffee production activities were resumed.

It is in this context that Fazenda Santa Bárbara’s mission is: “Making Special Coffees Through Special People” with the aim of meeting the demands of food security, mitigating climate change with identity and sustainability. The total area of the rural property is 88.96 hectares, of which 64 hectares are destined for the cultivation of Mundo Novo and Topázio coffee varieties.

Fazenda Santa Bárbara has ensured coffee productivity associated with sustainable projects within the property, with: projects for treating waste, ash water and organic waste; rational use of water resources, food security project, bee protection project and honey production. These activities on the property strengthen the preservation of fauna and flora, favoring the stability of natural systems that are essential for coffee production.

Furthermore, by converting the farm’s production system, the owners changed the alternative use of the land. Before with the predominance of livestock activities such as cattle farming with pastures and now with the cultivation of coffee. Maintaining sustainable productive activities in the coffee plantation guarantees jobs and the generation of local wealth. In this current scenario, coffee cultivation promotes the removal of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 from the atmosphere), elevating the coffee-producing rural property to the role of mitigator. This mitigation role occurs mainly through the removal of GHGs from the atmosphere. For example, coffee cultivation contributes to carbon sequestration, helping to mitigate the increase in CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Coffee, in addition to removing CO2 and storing carbon, stores and emits H2O vapor into the atmosphere, helping to maintain the balance of the local microclimate.
