Tero Carbon is proud to announce the publication of version 2.1 of its Certification, Methodologies, and Assets Programs, along with an updated and robust set of methodologies for the AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use) sector. This is not just an update but a strategic milestone that raises the bar for carbon market integrity and places our partners at the forefront of the sector’s transformations.

This advancement is the direct result of a collaborative public consultation process, reinforcing our commitment to transparency and building an ecosystem of trust. The new versions are now publicly available on our website.

A Milestone for the Carbon Market: Ready for the SBCE

The main highlight of version 2.1 is its strategic alignment with Law nº 15.042/2024, which establishes the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (SBCE). Tero Carbon thus becomes the only Brazilian certifier with a framework already prepared for the requirements of the regulated market.

Isso significa que os projetos certificados sob nossas novas metodologias e programas estarão um passo à frente, com maior segurança e potencial para integrar o futuro mercado regulado de carbono no Brasil, garantindo um diferencial competitivo decisivo.

Alignment with Global Integrity Standards

In addition to our national pioneering, version 2.1 consolidates our alignment with the most demanding international benchmarks for quality and integrity, including:

  • ICROA (International Carbon Reduction and Offsetting Alliance): Our principles comply with the Code of Best Practice, assuring buyers that Tero Carbon credits represent real and verified climate mitigations.
  • CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation): The framework was developed with an eye toward future eligibility for the global aviation market, one of the most stringent in the world.

Key Enhancements in Version 2.1

The new versions bring greater clarity, robustness, and legal and technical security to the entire carbon project lifecycle:

  • Structured Governance: Dedicated documents for the Certification Program, Methodologies Program, and Assets Program, which organize the rules in a clear and auditable manner.
  • High-Integrity AFOLU Methodologies: Updates to the REDD+, APD (Avoided Planned Deforestation), ARR (Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation), and Carbon Stock methodologies, with enhanced mechanisms for additionality, permanence, and leakage.
  • Clear Distinction of Assets: We reinforce the fundamental difference between VCUs (Verified Carbon Units), intended for offsetting, and VCSUs (Verified Carbon Stock Units), focused on recognizing environmental assets, thereby promoting transparency and preventing greenwashing.
  • Built on Feedback: All improvements were built upon the valuable contributions received during the public consultation period for version 2.0.
